What I Have to Say: Tracy Foster

When I founded ONA, the camera bag and accessories company that I launched nearly four years ago, I had no idea where the journey would take me. I was working at a school at the time, and I had just returned from a vacation in South Africa. Throughout the trip, I wished that I had a camera bag that didn’t exist. And when I returned home, I imagined what it would be like to create a company that resonated with people who love photography and who value quality of craftsmanship and style as much as I do.

Today, thanks to our wonderful customers, ONA bags are carried all over the world. It’s been an incredible few years, and there aren’t words to express how grateful I am.

So what have I learned during this journey? Since launching in June 2010, I’ve learned a lot about product design and manufacturing, leather and textiles, and sales and marketing. But some of the most significant things I’ve learned have been lessons that I think could apply to any photographer, or business owner, or really anyone with a vision that they’re working toward. I’ve learned that:

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. This Leonardo da Vinci quote is one of my favorites. At ONA, I apply this philosophy to everything from our product design to our strategic planning processes. I’ve discovered that more often than not, and in many areas in life and in business, it’s far better to have a few really great, meaningful things than lots of mediocre ones.

Gratitude changes everything. In a world where so much emphasis is placed on having more – more clients, more time, more money, more followers – it becomes so easy to hone in on what we don’t have, rather than being grounded in a sense of appreciation for what is. Even as I work diligently toward achieving new goals, I’m learning to be grateful for who I am and what I have right now.

Challenges are opportunities. In the moment, it can be tough to look at challenging situations this way. But when I do, and when I choose to adopt a positive mindset in the face of difficulty, I find myself in a much clearer place and much better positioned to tackle the challenge head-on.

The simplest things in life bring the most joy. Yes, this is a lot like the first point. But how true is it that simple things, like a chat with a loved one, a hug from a friend, a quiet moment of reflection and gratitude, are really what bring us the most joy? In the day-to-day grind of our work lives, we must remember to make time for the things that matter most.

It’s important to enjoy the journey. While life is unpredictable and challenges are inevitable, to the extent that you can act with intention and create a business and a life that you truly love and are proud of, it’s worth every effort. Enjoy the journey.
