What if I told you that I believe my weddings are created because I take my time when I’m cooking dinner and not because I have Google Ads? That some of my favourite portrait shoots were documented when I was in the worst of moods and I smiled anyway, rather than because I had the best equipment? You may think it’s a little esoteric but please stick with me here.
The basic law of attraction dictates that ‘like attracts like.’ To me, that means I should strive to be happy in all areas of my life; that my confidence as a parent, a partner, and a friend will attract confidence from the clients whose collaboration makes my work shine. It really is about the philosophy of putting in what you’d like back, and three years into my wedding photography business I consider that to be a vital piece of advice, for my work and for my home life.
Like so many creatives I know, I have these massive dips. Panic sets in and I sit asking myself the same questions: “How do I create money?” “Where is the next wedding going to come from?” “Have I advertised enough?”
The mistake I that I so often make in these dips is that I give my attention unequivocally to specific things; I try to find definitive methods for dealing with the answers rather than reminding myself to sit back and take a breather. I obsess over whether I should take out another advertisement on a wedding blog or how successful a discount on albums for a limited time would be. I’m not saying here that these ideas don’t bring in work, it’s just that for me they can also become futile because I become needy as a result… and in turn create more negativity. It’s a never-ending cycle, and despite knowing that all it would take is rearranging the furniture (literally and figuratively!), it’s a struggle to get out of.
If you’re sitting reading this wondering what I’m talking about, spend a whole week writing a ‘grateful for’ list every day. You can keep this to yourself or, even better, share it out on social media or with the people closest to you. During that week also note the enquiries that come in, or the change in your skin, or your relationship with your other half; whatever it is in your life that you feel needs that extra sparkle.
What I have seen is that giving your attention to something is an integral part of creation and yet, I am incredibly aware that the conclusion you so covet is rarely guaranteed via the thing you think it will be.
True success, true creation, true inspiration takes being able to think out of the box. And oh my, is it freeing.
